Natural stimulants: essential oils for fatigue

We are already a few days into the new year and you may already be working on your New Year’s resolutions. Essential oils as stimulants for fighting fatigue

Essential oils are volatile compounds of organic substances which are derived from plant sources. Essential oils are absorbed particularly well via the gastrointestinal tract, the skin or the mucous membranes. They send a signal via the nervous system to the brain which releases the so-called happiness hormones such as serotonin or endorphins.

A lot of essential oils are known for having a relaxing effect but the opposite is also possible. The right fragrances can be used as natural stimulants and have an energising effect.

Tips for using essential oils for fatigue

Essential oils can be used in many different ways: you can apply them to the skin, inhale them or directly ingest them. You should only choose naturally pure and not synthetically produced oils for these applications. Essential oils can be added to a bath, used for massages or – if you enjoy experimenting – even in the kitchen. However, you should always consult an expert first to find out whether the oil you have chosen is suitable for direct ingestion and what dose to use. 

A highly recommended option is to use essential oils in an aroma diffuser. An aroma diffuser uses a mixture of water and essential oil to create tiny particles which it releases into the indoor air. Not only does it enable you to absorb the essential oil via your airways while producing a fresh, invigorating fragrance at the same time, it also makes a beautiful decorative element for your home. Water is the magic formula for fighting fatigue

As simple as it is effective: by drinking plenty of water, you support your body and promote wakefulness. But drinking a lot of water (a simple guide is 0.03 litres per kilo of body weight per day) is not the only way that you can feel revitalised and stimulate your circulation. A shower that alternates between hot and cold can have the same effect. If you are unable to have a shower, splashing your face or arms with cold water can also have a stimulating effect. 

Exercise and fresh air boost vitality 

Exercise wakes you up and gets your body going again: combine it with fresh air and you’ve got the perfect remedy for fatigue. A short walk in the fresh air is all it takes to recharge your energy reserves. 

Have a powernap 

The so-called “powernap” – a snooze rather than a deep sleep – is a very effective way of fighting fatigue. But you shouldn’t nap for too long – between 10 and 30 minutes is recommended for optimum benefit – otherwise you will enter the REM sleep stage and feel worn out when you wake up. 

Healthy diet rich in vitamins to boost energy 

A lack of minerals and vitamins can make you feel tired. That is why it is important to get sufficient micronutrients and the best way to do that is through a healthy, balanced diet rich in nutrients. In particular, a lack of B vitamins, vitamin C, iron and magnesium can lead to tiredness. Meat, fish, wholegrain products and pulses are a good source of B vitamins, for example. For Vitamin C, the best sources are fruit and vegetables while you can get the iron that you need by eating red meat or pulses such as beans, peas and lentils. Good sources of magnesium include broccoli, potatoes, wholemeal bread or nuts. Especially in the winter months, taking vitamin D based on advice from a specialist can also help combat winter fatigue. 

So you see, there are lots of simple tips for fighting tiredness. A particularly easy method for getting rid of fatigue and making your home smell good at the same time is the use of essential oils. Combine these with additional stimulants and you will be optimally prepared to be fit and full of energy this year.
