Bernhard & Burkard

During our years of study, we (Fabian Bernhard and Thomas Burkard) recognised the mutual passion for clear and simple shapes as well as for unconventional concepts and smart ideas. In 2010, we founded the BERNHARD I BURKARD design studio. Innovative and functional solutions combined with high creative quality and the sensible use of resources have been what we demand of our drafts ever since. Design is not meant to be a mere purpose in itself but should define a product in a holistic way and, at the same time, create added value that generates sustainable success for all users.

For me, as an artist and designer, the boundaries between these two disciplines are fluid on one hand but also limiting on the other hand. Yet always mutually enriching. The first objects I designed were for my home requirements. I was fascinated by the possibility of creating associative objects that had a practical value. At the same time, they should be things with personality that perhaps even concealed unknown functions. My designer pieces open up their own shape universe with a twinkle in your eye. As a designer, it is fascinating to combine a design concept with the need of functionality without compromise.

Since the very start, I have had the privilege to co-develop and design products for Martin Stadler and the Stadler Form Team. What started with humidifier Fred has grown into a sizeable range of products. For me and my work as a designer, it is extremely enriching to have been able to see and experience this development. For me as a designer, the process of designing a product is about achieving the following goals: a clear product language and aesthetics, implemented with resource-friendly, durable materials; a simple, intuitive operation and comfortable handling; a clear function, convenience and pleasure to use.

Developing new ideas has always been my passion. As a child, I wanted to be an inventor, tried to build a submarine and ran a chemistry lab in my bedroom. Nowadays, I approach design projects by working on the computer or in the workshop. I love to be versatile in my work and have designed everything from kettles through medical devices to chocolate bars. The main goal is always to design simple and beautiful solutions. A designer cannot be successful on his own, but the close cooperation with Stadler Form lets my vision become reality. It makes me happy when a product of mine finally hits the shelves, while my focus at that point is already on the next project.
