Buying a dehumidifier: what do you need to consider?
The size of the room is crucial when choosing the right dehumidifier. The larger the room, the higher the dehumidification capacity should be. It is important to consider the room volume (area in square meters x room height). As a rule, manufacturers assume a room height of 2.5 meters for their room size recommendation.
Depending on where (laundry room, cellar, living room) the dehumidifier is used, other criteria are important. If you are considering drying laundry, a dehumidifier with a swing function is suitable. For water damage, an industrial construction dryer is more suitable. A quiet dehumidifier with a night mode is ideal for dehumidifying bedrooms or living rooms. Mobile dehumidifiers are easy to move around on castors.
If the humidity is very high, the dehumidifier should remain switched on all the time if possible. The energy consumption can be controlled if the appliance has a hygrostat. The hygrostat can be used to set the desired target humidity. As soon as this is reached, the appliance switches off automatically.
Depending on the model and intended use, the water collection volume is also decisive. Commercially available dehumidifiers for private use usually have a dehumidification capacity of max. 20 liters per 24 hours and a water tank capacity of 4–5 liters. Ideally, the dehumidifier has a connection option for a hose to remove the condensation water in drainage mode.
Dehumidifiers with granulate are cheaper to buy, but the ongoing purchase of desiccant must be factored into the overall costs. Compressor dehumidifiers are initially more expensive, as quality has its price. For a dehumidifier to function reliably for several years, it must be equipped with high-quality components. These components are reflected in the price.
The different dehumidifier systems
Condensation/compression dryer
A surface in the appliance is cooled by means of a compressor. The warm, humid air is channelled over this surface. The excess water vapour in the air remains on the surface in the form of water droplets and flows into a collection container or, optionally, directly into a drain using a drainage hose. These devices perform best the warmer and more humid the air is. Stadler Form dehumidifiers work according to this principle.
Peltier dehumidifier
Similar to compression dryers, the air is cooled via a cold surface and thus dehumidified. As this is done electrically via the Peltier element, this type of dryer is not ideal for entire homes as the output is rather low.
Absorption dryer
Water-binding material removes the water from the humid air. The cooler the temperatures, the better the efficiency. These appliances are therefore particularly suitable for cellars and at low temperatures. With these dehumidifiers, the dehumidification process not only produces drier air, but also warmer air – which additionally supports dehumidification, as warmer air can absorb more moisture.
Desiccant dryer
A passive device that works without electricity. The effect of water binding by special salts is utilised. However, the efficiency is very low and therefore not suitable for large drying tasks. Another disadvantage is that the granulate has to be refilled regularly, resulting in follow-up costs.
