Why odours after raclette and fondue are so persistent

Raclette with bacon

The intense flavours of melted cheese, garlic and various dips make raclette and fondue a culinary experience. However, the enjoyment of warm cheese dishes not only leaves happy taste buds, but also odour particles in the room. These odour particles float in the air, settle stubbornly on surfaces and textiles and remain there. Fortunately, there are some tried-and-tested, simple tips and tricks to remove these particles and neutralise odours after raclette and fondue.

Removing raclette and fondue odours: tips & tricks

Lemon and lime with cloves

  • Airing is key: open your windows and doors immediately after a cosy raclette or fondue to let in fresh air and dispel the smell. Instead of leaving just one window open for hours on end, airing the room in bursts is more effective. Open all windows for about 10 minutes every few hours to create a draught and exchange the air.
  • Baking soda or baking powder: These two household remedies are generally characterised as true miracle cures and can be used in many ways. Simply sprinkle the baking soda or baking powder on textiles and furniture and leave it to work overnight. The next day, you can simply vacuum it up with a vacuum cleaner. Baking soda and baking powder bind odour particles and are real odour killers.
  • Vinegar and water mix: Vinegar is known to bind any kind of odour and has an antibacterial effect. Simply mix one part vinegar with two parts water and place the bowl in the room. The vinegar literally absorbs the unpleasant odours after raclette or fondue.
  • Coffee beans: Coffee is also known for its odour-neutralising properties. Depending on the intensity of the raclette and fondue odours, you can either simply place a bowl of coffee beans in the room or, if the odour is more intense, roast the coffee beans and then distribute them in small bowls.
  • Spices and fruit: Oranges, lemons and cloves are particularly suitable. For example, put the cloves in half a lemon and place them on the dining table or where the bad odours are most intense. The essential oils in oranges and lemons bind the bad odours and cloves bring antibacterial freshness.
  • Fragrances and essential oils: if you want to do it quickly, you can also diffuse fragrances using room sprays, scented candles, incense sticks or aroma diffusers. Aroma diffusers are particularly suitable for this as they distribute the fragrance continuously and evenly throughout the room. Simply add a few drops of essential oil to the water and the aroma diffuser will take care of the rest.
